A Pioneering Space

As a Brooklyn resident for nearly 15 years, I have watched many neighborhoods grow and change in fascinating ways. One of the most intriguing to me has always been Red Hook, as it sits uniquely apart from the rest of Brooklyn, separated by the elevated BQE and jutting out into the water of the Upper Bay. Comprised mainly of industrial buildings and 19th-century housing, there is a sense of being outside of time when you visit. And you should take the time to visit... I recommend taking a stroll down Van Brunt Street and trying the amazing food at Fort Defiance, Grindhaus, and The Good Fork. Grab a beer at Sunny's Bar, which has been in operation since 1890, or grab some of the best BBQ in the country at the recently opened Hometown.

But most of all, make sure you schedule a visit to Pioneer Works. In the last 6 years this non-profit center for research and experimentation has hosted a broad range of educational programs, performances, arts and science residencies, and exhibitions. Its goal is to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries, foster community, and provide a space where alternative modes of thought are supported and activated in tangible ways. I have personally attended classes on the history and structure of locks, enjoyed numerous artist retrospectives, explored a variety of sound and light events, and recently saw a terrific musical performance by Bon Iver. This is a space that welcomes change and growth and thus helps develop the greater New York community in a myriad of positive ways. Come experience it for yourself...
